Stay on top of your electrical inspection and testing requirements with an Electrical Equipment Register.
Electrical testing and tagging is a legal requirement for many Australian businesses. If you use plug-in electrical items in certain environments they need to be regularly tested and tagged in accordance with AS/NZS 3760. This applies to all businesses in Australia, except Victoria (where it is strongly recommended but not strictly required). Workplaces that need to have their electrical equipment tested and tagged include places like construction sites, workshops, industrial sites, commercial kitchens, and outdoor workplaces. Electrical circuits in these sorts of environments also need to be protected by a Residual Current Device (RCD) which needs to be regularly inspected and tested as well.
Who is it for?
This register is designed for Australian businesses that use portable or plug-in electrical equipment, especially in construction, maintenance, fabrication, commercial kitchens, industrial sites, outdoor workplaces, and other environments that are potentially hostile for electrical equipment.
When is it used?
This register should be maintained as part of your regular electrical safety program, with equipment details updated as items are purchased, tested, tagged, repaired, or retired. It supports compliance during scheduled inspections, routine maintenance, and RCD testing.
What’s included?
This blank Electrical Equipment Register is ready to be populated with information about the electrical equipment at your workplace. It includes space to record:
- Item details
- Last test date, test interval and next test due date
- Tester’s name and licence number
- Results of test or any action taken
The Microsoft Excel file is easy to search, has a clear layout, and will help you keep track of which items are due (or nearly due) for testing and tagging. It has four sheets:
- A register for testing and tagging of plug-in equipment
- A register for testing of RCDs
- Guidance on how to use the Electrical Equipment Register, and what kind of equipment and devices need to be included
- A table of testing intervals for different environments and different devices.
Items are due (or nearly due) for testing are automatically highlighted for your convenience.
Meeting your legal requirements
Under WHS laws, businesses must ensure that electrical equipment is safe to use, including regular testing, tagging, and inspection, particularly in hostile environments like construction sites, workshops, industrial sites, humid environments, and outdoor environments. Maintaining an up-to-date Electrical Equipment Register helps you meet these obligations and demonstrate compliance with electrical safety and RCD testing requirements.
